The Big East: Building One Reputation for 16 Competitors

Theory: Fall 2010 – Dr. Brenda Wrigley, APR

I conducted a qualitative research project focused on the reputation management practices of the nations largest Division IA Conference: The BIG EAST. Click here (BIG EAST) to read the full paper.

This case study explores how the Big East Conference utilized reputation management theory to create a reputation that suits the members within its strategic alliance model. The research was conducted and then analyzed using triangulation of in-depth interviews with conference office and member institute communications employees, archival material and documentation. The research sheds light on reputation management and internal communication practices within a strategic alliance. The author concluded that theory and practice align in the majority of the process, while strategic alliances dealing with organizations or non-profits seem to differ in practice from the literature on traditional strategic alliances.

Hill Communications at Newhouse

While at Syracuse University, I worked with Hill Communications, the student-run public relations agency. Hill Communications is a full service PR agency that provides clients in the Syracuse area and nationwide with services from research to social media campaigns and beyond. The agency’s profits benefit the Newhouse chapter of the William P. Ehling Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA).

During the Fall 2010 semester I worked on the Syracuse Parks Conservancy (SPC) account. We carried out a social media campaign for the client, giving them a presence on Facebook and Twitter. Check out some of the SPC press releases we produced below.

SECS in the City
Our class compiled hours of work into one multimedia project. Each student went out to different areas in the city of Syracuse to document what was happening the morning of August 3. I did my story on Urban Outfitters coming to Armory square. Check out my story and the stories of my classmates!

LA Limelight Magazine

I designed a magazine layout for a six-page story about the 2010 NBA Finals. We had to come up with a fake magazine. My magazine was called LA Limelight, a seasonal magazine focused on exciting things happening around Los Angeles. The spread is based around a story that was featured in the Sept. 2010 edition of SLAM Magazine.Follow the link to view a PDF of the six-page magazine spread highlighting the 2010 NBA Finals.
